Cobblestones

He dragged his heart against his shoulder, fumbling to keep it from falling to the cobblestones. Lovers nailed parchments near the bottom, claiming part of it as their own. The two legs from under it crossed the street, still clutching it firm. Wandering eyes pierced the wood as passing cars flickered headlights on the man. None saw through.
